Last week, Canning Vale College came together to honour the culture, history, and contributions of Australia’s First Nations Peoples. The day centred on this year’s NAIDOC theme, “50 Years of Deadly”, which encourages us to recognise the strength, pride, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A particular focus was placed on acknowledging the Noongar people, the Traditional Custodians of our local Boodja.
Our whole‑school assembly featured a powerful Welcome to Country from Sandra Harbin, followed by an engaging performance from a visiting dance group. Their interactive approach encouraged students and staff to join the circle, participate in traditional dances, and speak words in First Nations language.
After the assembly, classes explored learning resources designed to deepen understanding of Aboriginal culture and perspectives. Activities included damper tasting and collaborative artwork under the guidance of Erika Fernandez.
A sincere thank‑you to all presenters, students, and staff who contributed to the planning and delivery of Indigenous Celebration Day. Your efforts helped create a meaningful and memorable celebration of culture, learning, and community.
Boordawan — until we meet again.
