On 10 November 2025, a group of CVCs year 9 students went on an excursion to the TAFE Midland campus.

After a scenic bus ride through the Midland hinterlands, the students arrived at Midland TAFE, where they were warmly welcomed by the lecturer alongside students from Darling Range College and a homeschool student.

The day began with a short campus tour en route to the Light Fabrication Workshops, followed by a safety induction. Students were then introduced to their project: building a barbecue from scratch!

Throughout the day, they worked hands-on with equipment such as a notcher, cold saw, punch and shear, finisher, two types of pan brakes, and a manual bar bender, along with various hand tools. This practical experience gave students a taste of TAFE life and the independence that comes with adult learning. From choosing when & how to do tasks, ensuring they were on time for class after breaks, and how to conduct themselves around other diverse students.

After an informative, engaging, and productive day, the return bus ride was quiet, with tired eyes and hands & minds full of fabricated metal.

A big thank you to Mr Gobby for supporting this fantastic opportunity for our students!
