Last Thursday our Year 11 general geography class spent the day in Fremantle, learning about all of the different types of tourism that are located in an area.

Students visited Fremantle Prison, where they listened out for ghosts of past inmates, learnt about the daily operations of the prison and observed how it has changed since its opening in 1855. The tour ended with the guide telling students about escape attempts made over the years. An attempt wasn’t just about getting out of the prison grounds but whether or not you could survive WA’s harsh bush land.

With the tour concluded, students visited Fremantle Oval, Esplanade Park, the University of Notre Dame, Esplanade Hotel as well as the markets and cafe strip, to observe how these places attract tourists to Fremantle and how they are affected by the presence of these people.

To end the day, a visit to the Roundhouse where students experienced the firing of the cannon and learnt how this building was the first built in Fremantle and served as a small jail.
