Year 11 CVC student Cairenn Dawson was one only 14 selected to attend last month’s Royal Australian Air Force Flight Camp for Young Women at Base Pearce. Cairenn was given to opportunity to experience military aviation roles first hand and learn the routines of an Air Force base.

Cairenn said it was an experience she would never forget.

“I enjoyed the (flight) simulator because I got to sit inside a realistic aircraft cockpit with realistic controls and pilot the aircraft while speaking to an instructor through a headset,” she said.

“The cockpit was completely surrounded by a screen that showed a realistic view of Perth – it was very cool.”

Diversity and Inclusion officer in charge squadron leader Jacqueline Killain said the participants were also able to enjoy mentoring sessions with pilot trainees and aviation officers, as well as team building and public speaking activities and military fitness training.

She said camp participants were selected on the strength of their application, leadership qualities and interest in future pilot and officer aviation roles.
