Delta the Dolphin Makes a Big Splash!
As part of the The Big Splash WA Schools Program, CVC along with 44 other WA schools were given a dolphin statue to decorate and exhibit alongside the large trail dolphins, which were decorated by artists and formed the vibrant public art trail through the streets, public spaces and parks of Perth from January 20th – March 4th 2018.
The Big Splash WA is run by the Perth Children’s Hospital to raise awareness and funds for the Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. Mental health is one of the top three most important issues for young Western Australians. Four times as many young people now present to Emergency Departments with mental health crises including repeated self-injury and attempted suicide compared to five years ago.
Mental health issues in children and young people tend to be minimised and not spoken about, with persisting feelings of shame and stigma in families leading to a lack of advocacy for services and research in this vital area. The Big Splash Program aims to change these alarming figures and bring mental health to the forefront, to ensure our children and young people receive the professional help that they deserve, when they need it most.
15 Year 8 students from CVC were selected by the Student Services team to work on the design of the Dolphin. They created a collaborative work that contains imagery by all those involved. After discussions around identifying negative and hurtful feelings and how we manage and overcome them, they created cartoons and creatures that personified their ideas and emotions. The students wanted the Dolphin itself (which they named Delta) to be covered with the positive actions and emotions that assist in managing and overcoming the challenges in our life as it crests the wave.
Canning Vale College is committed to maximising the mental health and wellbeing of our students. Through prevention and early intervention we aim to foster positive outcomes for our school and the wider community. The fun and vibrant Big Splash program was a fantastic opportunity for our Arts and Student Services teams to come together to promote mental health among our students.
All school sculptures were exhibited at the farewell event on Sunday 18th March at the Perth Convention Centre. Delta has now made her way back to CVC and will be displayed in the CVC Business Centre foyer, as a symbol of our ongoing commitment to mental health awareness and well-being.
