CVC Awarded CHAT Gold School
Late last year Canning Vale College was awarded for our commitment to resilience, road and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) through the CHAT Program.
CVC was one of 12 schools recognised for being amongst the first in the state to reach Gold Level – the pinnacle of the CHAT Program.
CHAT is School Drugs Education and Road Aware’s (SDERA) award winning whole school approach initiative that 122 schools in Western Australia are currently implementing to achieve better health and wellbeing outcomes for their school community. Best practice research indicates clearly that a whole school approach to any health related issue where schools, parents and communities work together can produce the best health outcomes. CHAT offers intensive, step-by-step support to develop a best practice whole-school approach to resilience, drug and road safety education.
The event was attended by various special guests including the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Deputy Premier, Minister for Health; Mental Health, the Hon. Samantha Row MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training, and Colin Pettit, the Commissioner for Children and Young People. CVC 2017 Principal Mr Rudrum attended along with Mrs Somerville – Nurse, Mrs Cooke and Mr Gray, Youth Worker and Yr 9 Coordinator.
The CHAT award recognises the hard work CVC have put in to resilience, road safety and ‘alcohol and other drugs’ education, programs, policies and initiatives.
Deputy premier Roger Cook said alcohol and other drugs education was “fundamental to building resilience in children”. Speaking at the awards ceremony on September 21, Mr Cook addressed the value of drug and alcohol education for young people and commended schools for their work.
Initiative coordinator Mick Jackson-Pierce said it made a difference in the wider community. “The benefits extend far beyond the classroom,” Mr Jackson-Pierce said. He said it helped children and young people make safer choices and made a “positive impact on the wider community”.
