Australian Mathematics Competition
Year 8 Award Winners Weihong Zhan, Way Thao Lim, Aarya Raut, Kenzo Harsono, Anjanette Lee
The Australian Mathematics Competition took place in Term 3 and CVC students have once again done themselves proud.
This event was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Competition in Australian Schools. In this time it has served almost all Australian secondary schools, providing feedback and enrichment to schools and students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in 40 countries. It has become a truly international event, with countries throughout the Pacific and South East Asia, and some from even further afield taking part.
Over a demanding 75-minute period, students pitted their wits against problem solving questions that ranged from a walk in the park to taxing to all but impossible. A little head scratching and some interesting facial expressions were observed as the students progressed through harder and harder questions. An audible sigh of relief rang out at the end of the competition.
The star performer this year was Year 8 student Anjanette Lee who achieved a High Distinction with a score in the 98th percentile for the whole of Western Australia. What an amazing effort!
Winners of Distinction Awards (for scores in the top 20% of the state) were:
Year 12 – Enoch Teo
Year 11 – Rehaab Syed
Year 10 – Hallee Pilleggi
Year 9 – Jan Briones, Daniel Pham, Ruchita Patil, Nikitha Tanubuddi
Year 8 – Josie Wood, Weihong Zhan, Way Thao Lim, Kenzo Harsono, Aarya Raut
Year 7 – Caitlin Bong, Ali Imran, Iason Loh, Luke Glover
Well done to all of the participants, see you again next year!
